Art &Calligraphy Instruction

Artists have a special way of seeing the world. While one person may see a tree, an artist sees the shape of the tree, the way its leaves shimmer in a breeze, and the rough texture of its bark. The Heart’s Calling shares this vision by offering instruction in creative visual arts for children ages six and up, teenagers and adults. Dedicated to quality instruction, we offer private lessons and  small classes of no more than six students,

allowing the time needed with each student in order to help him or her grasp the material taught and practice techniques. We are also dedicated to keeping our art instruction affordable, and you “pay as you go.” Check out our low fees:

         Private Lessons (one person)                                              $20 per hour

         Small Classes (two to six people)                 $10 per hour per person

We sell the supplies needed at discount prices as well.  No need to run all over Middle Tennessee to find them.

L E S S O N    O F F E R I N G S   

Our lessons are tailored to each age group and to the material taught. Ongoing lessons build upon each other, running in series of two to six lessons, while “specialty” lessons may be taught in only one meeting. Private lessons and special classes for groups may be scheduled by appointment.

C H I L D R E N ‘ S   A R T  (Ages 6—8)

Beginning Drawing  Children will learn the basics of composition and how to see things in the world around them in simple shapes that they can use to draw them.  (Five 1-hour lessons)

Beginning Painting    Students will learn how to mix colors and be able to identify primary, secondary, tertiary and complimentary colors as they gain hands-on experience creating their own paintings.  (Four 1-hour lessons)

Intermediate Drawing   Children will have fun learning to draw people and animals in motion.  (Four 1-hour lessons)

A R T   F O R   T W E E N S  (Ages 9—12)

Drawing Older children will learn principles of composition, perspective drawing, and how to break subjects down into simpler shapes to draw them more realistically.  (Five 1-hour lessons)

Colored Pencil Techniques  Students will learn how to blend color to create light and shading effects as they create still life drawings, landscapes, and animal portraits.  (Four 1-hour lessons)

Beginning Watercolor   Students will learn to depict light, textures and shading using watercolor techniques and experiment with mixed media using pen and ink and pencil.  (Four 1-hour lessons)

C A L L I G R A P H Y   F O R   T W E E N S  (Ages 9—12)

Older children will learn the basics of Italic, Gothic, Bookhand and Roman calligraphy styles in three series of six 1-hour lessons.  One 1-hour lesson on creating illuminations is also offered.

T E E N S   A N D   A D U L T S  (13—Adult)

Teen and adult lessons cover some of the same material, but are much more in-depth than the children’s and tweens’ lessons.
